What Is the Cancun Resort Las Vegas?

Cancun Resort Las Vegas

Located south of the excitement of the Las Vegas Strip, the Cancun Resort Las Vegas is a family friendly hotel for all ages. Now, this is not always the case in Sin City with all of its legendary adult debauchery. Our favorite part is the Mayan-inspired pool area with its cascading waterfall, which looks like a mini pyramid lifted straight out of the Yucatán jungle in Mexico. For kids and those who are kids at heart, four large water slides invite to play, as do hot tubs. The rooms and suites are modern but humble-looking for Sin City, where opulence is king.

The rooms are clean, relatively spacious, with private balconies and sitting areas, and decorated in soothing cream and brown tones. Some feature nice Mayan-inspired touches in the form of little statues, baskets, art and throw-pillows. Keep in mind that the Cancun Resort Las Vegas is not vying to be a top-of-the-line luxury hotel.

Aside from its 440 air-conditioned rooms with kitchens boasting full-sized refrigerators, microwaves, stove, dishwasher, cooking utensils and coffee maker, there are also laundry facilities, a fitness center, a spa, a 24-hour front desk, safes, flat-screen TVs, free WiFi  and a game room with pool tables --- should you tire of all the madness, flashiness and moving masses on the Strip which can be daunting. It's not located right on the Strip but close to Bali Hai Golf Club, Town Square Las Vegas and the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign. The latter is an Instagram-worthy stop.

Highlights

Highlights include the pool area with its fun and fast water slides, Mayan pyramid replica and cabanas with hammocks. We always appreciate free WiFi and we love that the kitchens are fully equipped with everything you need to make a meal. Also convenient: the business center offering Internet usage and boarding pass printing.

Ease of Use:

Check in is late, 4 pm, and check-out is early, 10am.  You can park only one vehicle per accommodation on-site. A stay requires a credit card for a $100 security deposit and a daily $25 plus tax resort fee. We mostly dislike that the resort cannot guarantee room location.

Quality:

This property offers a basic stay in Las Vegas with a cool pool, but it is far from the Strip and lacks most of the amenities we expect in all hotels. There's no casino or restaurant and the hotel could benefit from some maintenance and cleanup, so it's a bit lacking in quality.

Cancellation Policy:

The Cancun Resort Las Vegas has a standard 72-hour cancellation policy for a full refund.

Pros

  • Kid-friendly family rooms
  • Facilities for disabled guests
  • Great pool
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Requires shuttle service to the Strip
  • Not as loaded in amenities as many other Las Vegas hotels
  • No real dining options
  • No casino
  • Sales pitches for time-shares

Luxor Hotel & Casino

The Luxor is home to Las Vegas' iconic black 30-story Luxor pyramid. The Luxor is one of the older hotels in Las Vegas, and it has been been surpassed by many luxe, over-the-top newcomers, but we still love its Egyptian motif. When it opened in 1993, it drew a throng of 10,000 people to admire its epic $375-million pyramid, which was at the time the tallest building on the Strip. It still boasts the world's largest atrium!

The Towers at Luxor have been remodeled and in a pleasing, clutter-free, minimalist style, and they boast great views of the city. As far as amenities, the Luxor outdoes the Cancun Hotel Las Vegas by far. It has a 120,000-square-foot casino with more than 2,000 slot machines and 87 table games, a very nice spa with a eucalyptus steam room and dry sauna, several restaurants, including a steakhouse, all-you-can-eat buffet, and a Starbucks, and several bars.

It's not a top-of-the-line Las Vegas hotel, but it features everything we'd expect, from business services and meetings to weddings to plenty of entertainment and very pleasant accommodations. The Luxor has also nabbed a four-key rating from the "Green Key Eco-Rating Program" for being a sustainable hotel operation.

Ease of Use

It's not too bombastic, so walking from your room to attractions inside the hotel is not as big of an issue as with many of the new enormous complexes. Check-in and check-out lines can be rather long. But we have experienced this even at places like the Venetian and elsewhere.

Quality:

This famous hotel of the old Las Vegas guard doesn't quite live up to all the glamorous Sin City newcomers with their celeb dining, world renowned shows and tech-savvy amenities, but it's still a great place to stay for those not seeking ultimate luxury, nonstop entertainment and ultra pampering. The quality is solid.

Cancellation Policy:

Luxor requires a minimum of 72 hours notice before your scheduled arrival date for a full refund.

Pros

  • Cool design with both Egyptian and minimalist theme
  • Nine restaurants
  • The world's largest atrium
  • Great room rates

Cons

  • Long lines at check-in
  • Daily resort fee
  • No celeb restaurants

MGM Grand Hotel and Casino

MGM Grand Hotel and Casino

Here's another big step up from the previous two hotels, with the Cancun Resort Las Vegas at the bottom and the Luxor second in line. Located right on the Las Vegas Strip, the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino is huge, and we mean enormous. This means both oodles of fantastic amenities but also a lot of walking from your room to pretty much everything.

The 5,044 generously sized rooms in the four, 30-story, emerald green towers have received a complete facelift. High roller types can opt for one of the 29 luxurious villas at The Mansion of MGM Grand. The designer Skylofts boast infinity-edge Jacuzzi spa tubs, steam rooms in the master bedrooms, and Dream Butlers delivering special pillows and teas.

Major highlights include the 53,000-square-foot pool landscape with a lazy river and private cabanas, the Forever Grand Wedding Chapel, the 16,800-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena, $180-million Cirque du Soleil production KÀ with a massive, rotating stage, and star chef restaurants such as Joël Robuchon, Michael Mina PUB 1842, Morimoto Las Vegas, Tom Colicchio's Craftsteak and Crush by top toque William DeMarco. If you love bourbon or Scotch, check out Whiskey Down offering more than 50 different selections of rare American, Canadian, Irish, and Scotch whiskies.

Ease of Use

This place is huge, which means lots of walking and getting lost sometimes. However, there's just so much cool stuff to do and experience that we're OK with it. We really have no complaints about the ease of use of the amenities, just be sure to make reservations. As with many Las Vegas pool scenes, this one can get boisterous and crowded. That has become the norm, it seems.

Quality:

This property offers literally everything we expect from a Las Vegas hotel experience, from casino and wedding chapel to, well, everything. You never have to leave the premises for entertainment, which includes a renowned Cirque de Soleil show, celeb chef restaurants and 6.5 acres of pool landscape with four swimming pools, cascading waterfalls, a lazy river, and poolside massages. It deserves a 4-star rating for offering a luxury hotel stay.

Cancellation Policy:

This property has a standard 72-hour cancellation policy for a full refund.

Pros

  • Great casino
  • Celeb-chef restaurants
  • Six-acre pool complex
  • Family friendly
  • Great entertainment and nightlife
  • 5 languages spoken (English, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino)

Cons

  • Busy pool scene can become overwhelming
  • Fee for WiFi internet
  • Vast hotel size equals lots of walking

ARIA Resort & Casino

ARIA Resort & Casino

Apologies to the Cancun Resort Las Vegas, but it cannot compete with the ARIA Resort & Casino, either. With a prime location on the Strip, this hotel is home to the incredible Cirque du Soleil "O" show. It also features Alibi Ultra Lounge, Jewel Nightclub, a two-level spa with salt room and Ganbanyoku stone beds, 300,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and an award from the U.S. Green Building Council for being environmentally friendly.

The 4,004 guest rooms and suites are tastefully decorated and feature the coolest gadget: a "good night" button that shuts off all lights, closes the curtains and turns on the privacy sign. Star-chef studded dining options are plentiful, from Jean Georges Steakhouse to Julian Serrano Tapas to Sage featuring cuisine by James Beard award-winning chef Shawn McClain, and much more.

Ease of Use

We have no complaints about the ease of use. Just make reservations before your arrival for the show, spa services, restaurants and more, and you won't be in for any unpleasant surprises. We love the high-tech good night button.

Quality:

Foodies will find fine celeb chef dining at the ARIA we well as the on-site Cirque du Soleil show "O," a gorgeous spa, and everything you need for a luxe but not too over-the-top stay in Las Vegas --- 4-star quality indeed.

Cancellation Policy:

This hotel has a standard 72-hour cancellation policy for a full refund.

Pros

  • Cirque du Soleil's "O" show
  • Luxe spa
  • Green award winner
  • Tech amenities such as "good night" button

Cons

  • Restaurants are pricey
  • In-suite technology can be hit or miss
  • Check-out can be a hassle

Conclusion

Upon investigating the Cancun Resort Las Vegas, we found that it lacks most amenities we've come to expect when visiting Sin City. It has no casino, no star chef restaurants, not to mention any real dining options, and not much else in terms of fun and entertainment. It's a solid stay at a great rate for people looking to do Las Vegas on a budget, especially families. We’ve given it 2.5 stars. This is by no means a negative rating, as it merely indicates that the Cancun Resort Las Vegas is not a luxury property like the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, which received our highest rating of 4 out of 5.

The Cancun Resort Las Vegas is a condominium hotel with nice, solid rooms and kitchens for in-room meal making and it has a fun pool area for whiling away the day in complete relaxation. There’s nothing wrong with featuring just that. It may not seem fair to compare a condominium property to a mega resort such as the MGM with all of its celeb dining and Cirque de Soleil show, but we were going on affordable prices, and visitors to Las Vegas should know what to expect from the Cancun Resort Las Vegas in complete transparency and fairness.

We hope this article has helped give you a better idea about what staying at the Cancun Resort Las Vegas will be like compared to a few other similar hotels in the area. So enjoy your time in the Entertainment Capital of the World, and Viva Las Vegas!
